Math Exchanges, Math Workstations and Universal Design for Learning
Mrs.Evans, Mrs. Jones, Mrs. White, and I have been chosen to take part in an action research project by the Department of Education. We are looking at how well Universal Design for Learning, Math Work Stations and Math Exchanges help all children to develop their numeracy and problem solving skills.
Universal Design for Learning strategies help all children use their strengths to learn new concepts and show their progress. We are designing our work stations and math exchanges (group work with the teacher) to include Multiple Intelligences, recognizing that each child is unique and smart in different ways. Some children may excel working with numbers, while others have a unique strength in our natural world, language, working with others or or physical movement.
We are collaborating with Cathy Martin, Math and Science Specialist with the Department of Education, and Dr. Ann Sherman, Dean of Education at UNB. Through the provincial grant and additional funding from UNB, we have been able to purchase math materials to support a variety of intelligences. We are excited to begin our action research project in early February 2014.
